How Does Volkswagen 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive Work?

In the simplest terms possible, Volkswagen 4MOTION® AWD distributes power between the front and rear axles on an infinitely variable basis using a multi-plate clutch. Under normal driving conditions, power is sent solely to the front axle for efficiency purposes. In the event that the system detects a loss of traction, the rear axle is activated in a fraction of a second.

This means that 4MOTION® is considered to be a permanently engaged four-wheel-drive system.
